What does a dental office need for infection prevention and control in Ontario?
Ontario dental offices are expected to meet the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario’s Standard of Practice for Infection Prevention and Control, which the College aligns with Public Health Ontario, PIDAC and the Public Health Agency of Canada. In practice that means written IPAC policies and procedures for the office, staff trained in them, instrument reprocessing monitored with chemical and biological indicators, and records showing all of it was actually done. There is no routine inspection to prepare for — the College enforces the standard through complaints and investigations, and public health units investigate IPAC complaints — so the first time a practice’s records are examined closely is usually after a concern has already been raised.
What the engagement covers
- Review of current practice against the RCDSO standard and the College’s own self-audit form
- A written IPAC policy and procedure manual for your office, not a generic template
- Staff training on hand hygiene, PPE and instrument reprocessing
- Sterilization monitoring routines — chemical and biological indicators, and what to do when a BI comes back positive
- The record-keeping that has to exist before an inspection, not after one
Who this is for
Dental practices preparing for a College facility inspection, opening a new office, or bringing IPAC practice back up to standard after a change of staff or equipment.
Where the authority sits. Syon Safety is not a certifying or inspecting body for IPAC. The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario sets the standard and inspects dental facilities against it. What we provide is the process, the written policy and the staff training that get a practice ready for that — the College remains the authority throughout.
The standard we build to
We prepare practices against this standard. Certification and inspection belong to the body that owns it, never to us.
